Niche writing is quickly becoming a popular genre in online writing. To be a niche writer or blogger, it is necessary to become, and be seen as, an expert in your field. With the flood of writers in the online universe, this can seem daunting. Here are some ways to quickly become an expert in your field of interest.
1. Know your stuff
Some people decide they are going to write about a topic because it is popular. The idea is, if they write about a popular topic, their articles or website will get lots of views. This is going about things backwards. No matter the topic you write about, to be a success in your field you must know what you are talking about and be able to write about it well. Ask yourself where your passions lie. Sometimes the things we know best seem to fade into the background because they are so much a part of our lives. Think about your hobbies, the jobs you have had, and the advice other people are always asking you for. If you can explain something clearly and you enjoy the topic, it may be a good niche for you to write about. Also, keep the topic focused. Instead of blogging about dogs, blog about large-breed dogs. Instead of writing about food, try writing about French recipes.
2. Become a presence in your niche
Starting a blog is a good place to start when making a presence in your niche. Websites like blogger.com and wordpress.com are free to join and are as easy to use as typing into a box. As you learn more, you can choose or design backgrounds for your blog, upload photos, and even add video and sound to your site. Blogs can be personal, informative, and resource-laden. A good blog has elements of all three. Blog about your niche. Write the information you wish people already knew about your niche. Post links that you find useful. Mention experts you respect. When you have a blog or website, join forums and message boards in your field of interest. Put links to your website in your signature line and ask and answer questions within the forum. This creates an internet presence. You can also write letters to the editor of your newspaper or trade magazine, getting your name mentioned in the literary field.
In the physical world, become a presence within your community. Join clubs and support groups within your niche. Just like in the internet forums, talk about your experience and answer questions. Don’t go into a meeting only to promote your business or website, though. Go because it is something you enjoy. When you make genuine connections within the community, let them know where they can find you on the internet.
3. Use your experience and presence in professional writing
Present yourself as an expert in your field by writing articles, attending conferences, and speaking about your niche. Give an interview to the local newspaper. Write an ebook, magazine articles, or send a manuscript to a publisher. When you have put this much energy into your field of interest, you will truly be an expert on the subject, and people will naturally come to you for information. Share your knowledge and experience, and you’ll all profit from the hard work you’ve done.
