   Saying someone is in a tailspin is a metaphor for saying their life is fast becoming a flaming pile of wreckage in the bottom of a smoking crater. Like when an airplane tailspins just before crashing into the ground. It means that the person in question is making horrible choices in their life and probably won’t fix anything until they can’t sink any lower.
